Park's brand column (4)
While talking with colleagues I found myself engaged in discussing; is there really a Lean Brand? Our conclusion was that the Lean Brand does not exist.
We managed to make a consensus that ‘Lean Branding’ makes sense, but ‘Lean Brand’ does not due to its conceptual contradictions. A few people have asked me this question, and I would like to share and discuss it with readers today.
Can the Lean Brand appearing in reputed overseas journals be wrong? You will also cast reasonable doubts on my argument.
The coinage was invented by a columnist. Since the concept of being lean is so popular on startup business circle, I think that the word 'lean' might be also considered easy to attach to the brand.
MIT(Massachúsetts Ìnstitute of Technólogy) that had observed Toyoda’s production system originally coined “Lean,” whose function was a methodology aimed at zero defect rate and zero inventory at the corporate production sites. And the startup industry jumped on the bandwagon adopting the popular word.
The essence of Lean is setting a hypothesis, running the cycles of ‘Build-Measure-Learn’ and, finally finding the optimal solution.
Lean is a suitable model when it comes to probing into business model or product/market fit. Even in the early stages of marketing and branding, this method is somewhat effective. The Lean way does not really matter until the brand settles in the consumer's mind.
In fact, common marketing also sets a hypothesis in the early stage of planning. Starting with the hypothesis, we do research and create concepts through modifying corrections. And even after launching, corrections take place. This process after launch is called rebranding or brand renewal. The difference between Rebranding and Lean Branding is continuity.
The early stages of startup should be lean because they are a process of seeking to find a competitive business model they will rely on. As the established industry is harder to change as much as startups are, Lean is better suited to IT-based startups.
However, when a pivoting, a shift in the strategic direction of the business, occurs in a startup, business brand changes more likely follow. We must call this case new branding, not Rebranding. And once the concept is being determined for some time, it follows the way existing companies do.
According to Lean definition, the brand has to constantly Build-Measure-Learn with reiterations, which leads to disable the gradual aggregation of the customer experience in the minds of customers.
Eventually, the recurrent brand experience changes will incur failures in positioning. The positioning of the brand takes time and needs to build up with consistency, but the intermittent changes will hinder any competent positioning.
In conclusion, I would say again Lean Branding exists, but Lean Brands cannot exist. This is because Lean Branding refers to the methodology of branding while Lean Brand refers to the type or character of the brand.
Therefore, the result of Lean Branding is not a Lean Brand, but a brand.
This logic reminds us of the case of e-brand and e-branding debated 20 years ago. E-branding exists, but e-brands do not. The result of e-branding is not an e-brand, but just a brand.
